This is another article in a series exploring the manufacture and marketing of our growing global culture. Here we take look at a very important pop cultural event, which took place in Bethel, New York in the year 1969. Bethel is a Biblical name and the legendary location of Jacob's Ladder, a "Ladder to Heaven".

Looking at the name "Woodstock" we can see the word "wood" as in trees or forest and "stock" as in "a supply of something for use or sale" or "the total amount of goods or the amount of a particular type of goods available in a shop" or "the amount of money that a company has through selling shares to people" or even more to the point, considering the concert was supposed to have taken place at a cow or Animal Farm:
"Woodstock" is also the name of a well known comic strip and cartoon character.
People as stock or animals. The Goddess Circe turned men into pigs. We get the word "Circle" or "Church" from Circe. We also get the word "circus" from Circe.
late 14c., in reference to ancient Rome, from Latin circus "ring, circular line," which was applied by Romans to circular arenas for performances and contests and oval courses for racing (especially the Circus Maximus), from or cognate with Greek kirkos "a circle, a ring," from PIE *kirk- from root *(s)ker- (3) "to turn, bend" (see ring (n.)).
In reference to modern large arenas for performances from 1791; sense then extended to the performing company, hence "traveling show" (originally traveling circus, 1838). Extended in World War I to squadrons of military aircraft. Meaning "lively uproar, chaotic hubbub" is from 1869. Sense in Picadilly Circus and other place names is from early 18c. sense "buildings arranged in a ring," also "circular road." The adjective form is circensian."
"Barnum was born in Bethel, Connecticut, the son of inn keeper, tailor and store-keeper Philo Barnum (1778–1826) and second wife Irene Taylor."
Bethel, New York: Birthplace of Woodstock
The farmer Max Yasgur addresses the crowd at Woodstock, the music festival. (clip below) Notice how good he is in front of such a large crowd and how he sounds like he is reciting scripted marketing dialogue. Notice too, how he "stays on message". This event seems more contrived than we the public have been told.
We are so conditioned by seeing highly edited material over and over, that we do not realize that the editing process can hide many sins. Whatever the deal was, this seems like a rehearsed and contrived speech. It should be, this was a commercial enterprise after all. The concert promoters were always going to make the film, as they filmed the construction of the site itself. I would guess there is more to the financing (and subsequent profiting) of this event than we have been told.
It seems much of our culture is manufactured and contrived. The entire thing but a show carefully controlled to introduce new and scheduled cultural norms to society, creating a subsequent marketplace that can be used to spur more commercial activity, (among other things).
See clip below, from the film "Woodstock", a predecessor to all the (contrived) reality television we can watch today.
KEEP IT IN "G"
- In the Baroque era, G major was regarded as the "key of benediction".
- Of Domenico Scarlatti's 555 keyboard sonatas, G major is the home key for 69, or 12.4% – about 50% more than the 8.3% one would expect in an even distribution.
- In the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, "G major is often a key of 6
8 chain rhythms", according to Alfred Einstein, although Bach also used the key for some 4
4-based works, including his third and fourth Brandenburg Concertos. Pianist Jeremy Denkobserves that the Goldberg Variations are 80 minutes in G major. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G_major
"The sign of Cancer is said to be associated with the characteristics: watery, phlegmatic, eloquent, cardinal, northern, commanding, nocturnal, tenacious, intuitive, and fruitful. Those who are born from June 21 to July 22 are born under Cancer. Cancer is a northern sign and its opposite Southern sign is Capricorn. Places that Cancer is associated with are the sea, rivers, brooks, wells, wash-houses, marsh grounds, and trenches."

The Woodstock concert event took place, not in Woodstock New York, but in the town of Bethel, over the course of three days. In Christian mythology, Jesus was crucified and was left in his tomb for three days. After that period of time, his resurrection was revealed to three women, all named Mary.
The Birth of Christ
Of course the humble birth of the son of a carpenter, Jesus takes place in a manger among farm animals, in Bethlehem. The normal folk would be as animals to the son of a mythological God. He would be, like an imagined alien from an advanced race, walking among us mere mortals, like the neo-mythic, solar figure of Superman himself, or as he would be called by his fictional people, "KAL-EL".
Bethlehem, is similar to the Biblical name, Bethel. (Beth-el)
The Mystical Nativity, Botticelli, 1500.
The Mystical Nativity depicts a scene of joy and celebration, of earthly and heavenly delight, with angels dancing at the top of the painting".
"At the top of the painting twelve angels dressed in the colours of faith, hope and charity dance in a circle holding olive branches, and above them heaven opens in a great golden dome, while at the bottom of the painting three angels embrace three men, seeming to raise them up from the ground. They hold scrolls which proclaim in Latin, "peace on earth to men of goodwill".
"The concert’s promoters were forced to make the decision to move the Festival just weeks before the scheduled dates. They turned to FM radio to spread the word. In this clip, legendary WNEW-FM personalities Scott Muni and Rosko give their listeners all the details, newsman Mike Eisgrau reports from the scene as the extraordinary events unfold in August 1969, and nearly forty years later (May 2008) Richie Havens and John Sebastian told me how they became a part of rock n’ roll history."

Bethel, New York is where the Woodstock concert actually took place. Is it possible the event was always going to take place here? It seems really odd to me that someone would hire all the acts and not have the venue secured in writing, by way of contract, as is the normal way of doing business.
It's not like this was the first concert or event like this. Securing venues and acts and having it all in writing so one is legally protected is common business practice. So it seems odd to me that we have this very dramatic element to the Woodstock story. Perhaps it was meant to simply draw attention and free press for the event.
"In April 1969, newly minted superstars Creedence Clearwater Revival became the first act to sign a contract for the event, agreeing to play for $10,000. The promoters had experienced difficulty landing big-name groups prior to Creedence committing to play. Creedence drummer Doug Clifford later commented, "Once Creedence signed, everyone else jumped in line and all the other big acts came on." Given their 3:00 a.m. start time and omission (at Creedence frontman John Fogerty's insistence) from the Woodstock film, Creedence members have expressed bitterness over their experiences at the famed festival."
"The original venue plan was for the festival to take place in Woodstock, New York possibly near the proposed recording studio site owned by Alexander Tapooz. After local residents quickly shot down that idea, Lang and Kornfeld thought they had found another possible location in Saugerties, New York. But they had misunderstood, as the landowner's attorney made clear, in a brief meeting with Roberts and Rosenman. Growing alarmed at the lack of progress, Roberts and Rosenman took over the search for a venue, and discovered the 300-acre (120 ha) Mills Industrial Park in the town of Wallkill, New York, which Woodstock Ventures leased for $10,000 in the Spring of 1969. Town officials were assured that no more than 50,000 would attend. Town residents immediately opposed the project. In early July, the Town Board passed a law requiring a permit for any gathering over 5,000 people. On July 15, 1969, the Wallkill Zoning Board of Appeals officially banned the concert on the basis that the planned portable toilets would not meet town code. Reports of the ban, however, turned out to be a publicity bonanza for the festival."The original venue plan was for the festival to take place in Woodstock, New York possibly near the proposed recording studio site owned by Alexander Tapooz. I have a feeling Bethel, NY was always going to be the location for the Woodstock Festival. The entertainment industry knew the area quite well. Nearby was the then famous resort, Grossinger's, where many comedians, like Buddy Hackett, performed. And the Monticello Raceway was also nearby. This had been opened in in 1958. There was no similar investment in gambling or entertainment near the real Woodstock, NY.
There was also the convenience of the nearby airports, not one but two. One was used to bring the acts to the staged event. Apparently Grossinger's had an airport in Liberty, NY. And the town of Bethel itself, happens to be the home to the Sullivan County International Airport.
"Asher Selig Grossinger moved from New York City to Ferndale in Sullivan County in the Catskill Mountains in the 1900s. There he rented rooms to visitors from New York City. His wife, Malke, operated the kosher kitchen, and Jennie Grossinger (1891–1972), his daughter, was the hostess. They called their home Longbrook House. In 1919, they sold it and purchased a bigger house on 100 acres (0.40 km2), calling it Grossinger's Terrace Hill House.
In 1952, Grossinger's earned a place in the history of skiing as the first resort in the world to use artificial snow. Reportedly, the Grossinger family offered a million dollars to rename the local O&W train station at Ferndale, NY to Grossingers, but were rebuffed by competing hoteliers. (Several years later when the passenger service from New York and New Jersey was suspended, they were sorry they had not accepted the offer.) By the time Jennie died in 1972, the hotel had grown to 35 buildings on 1,200 acres (4.9 km2) that served 150,000 guests a year. It had its own airstrip and post office. During his fighting days Rocky Marciano would train at the resort. But in the late 1970s and 1980s, resorts like Grossinger's or the Concord could no longer attract younger guests.
In August 1984, Grossinger’s, in its dying years, promoted a Woodstock weekend to mark the 15th anniversary of the festival. It featured a workshop in tie-dyeing, a musical performance by David-Clayton Thomas, formerly of Blood, Sweat & Tears, a midnight showing of the four-hour documentary "Woodstock," and an appearance by John Sebastian, who advised, "Don't eat the purple tzimmes." Abbie Hoffman, who was thrown off the Woodstock stage by Pete Townshend of The Who for making a political speech, was brought in by Grossinger’s for the promotion."
Like The Houses of The Holy.
The name Beth itself has an interesting wikipedia entry that alludes to the Kennedy Assassination, as according to the official story, the body of the young Arthurian President was flown all the way from Dallas, Texas, to the Bethesda Naval Hospital, now renamed the Walter Reed National Military Center. (see below).
The Pool of Bethesda
"The Pool of Bethesda is a pool of water in the Muslim Quarter of Jerusalem, on the path of the Beth Zeta Valley. The fifth chapter of the Gospel of John describes such a pool in Jerusalem, near the Sheep Gate, which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. It is associated with healing. Until the 19th century, there was no evidence outside of John’s Gospel for the existence of this pool; therefore, scholars argued that the gospel was written later, probably by someone without first-hand knowledge of the city of Jerusalem, and that the ‘pool’ had only a metaphorical, rather than historical, significance.
In the 19th century, archaeologists discovered the remains of a pool fitting the description in John’s Gospel."
"The name of the pool is said to be derived from the Hebrew language and/or Aramaic language. beth hesda, meaning either house of mercy or house of grace. In both Hebrew and Aramaic the word could also mean 'shame, disgrace'. This dual meaning may have been thought appropriate since the location was seen as a place of disgrace due to the presence of invalids, and a place of grace, due to the granting of healing."
Jacob's Ladder, like the rainbow bridge to Asgard,
joins the Earth and the Heavens and is the means by which angelic creatures travel from the spiritual world to the material and back again.
Bethel, NY or Bethel and the Stairway to Heaven
"Bethel is mentioned several times in Genesis. It is first mentioned in Genesis 12, but the best-known instance is probably Genesis 28, when Jacob, fleeing from the wrath of his brother Esau, falls asleep on a stone and dreams of a ladder stretching between Heaven and Earth and thronged with angels; God stands at the top of the ladder, and promises Jacob the land of Canaan; when Jacob awakes he anoints the stone (baetylus) with oil and names the place Bethel. Another account, from Genesis 35 repeats the covenant with God and the naming of the place (as El-Bethel), and makes this the site of Jacob's own change of name to Israel. Both versions state that the original name of the place was Luz, a Canaanite name."
"Bethel (Ugaritic: bt il, meaning "House of El" or "House of God", Hebrew: בֵּית אֵל, also transliterated Beth El, Beth-El, or Beit El; Greek: Βαιθηλ; Latin: Bethel) was a border city described in the Hebrew Bible as being located between Benjamin and Ephraim and also a location named by Jacob."
A representation of the youth of the 1960's. Here they are penned in like animals on Yasgur's (cow) farm. This celebration marks the beginning of a new era. The "hippie" culture was only just beginning in 1969, not ending.
This was the dawn or "birth" of the modern era, a birth of the modern human cultured or cultivated, mind.
This was the birth of the commercial world we live in today, in many ways. That would seem to be what this year and this event represents. President John F. Kennedy began the era, with his call of selfless duty and Moon landings punctuated by his apparent, literal personal sacrifice. By 1969, humanity would have seemed to have achieved those feats, in one way or another.
Antenna on old television sets were called "rabbit ears". Like the magician's rabbit pulled from a hat. This was the standard at the time of Woodstock, 1969. The wireless 'revolution' would end with the advent of cable television, proving the wire is a better medium than the "air". Perhaps this is why Nikola Tesla sought to use the Earth itself as the medium for transmission of electrical power and information.

I came upon a child of God
He was walking along the road
And I asked him where are you going
And this he told me
I'm going on down to Yasgur's farm *
I'm going to join in a rock 'n' roll band
I'm going to camp out on the land
I'm going to try an' get my soul free
We are stardust
We are golden
And we've got to get ourselves
Back to the garden
Then can I walk beside you
I have come here to lose the smog
And I feel to be a cog in something turning
Well maybe it is just the time of year
Or maybe it's the time of man
I don't know who I am
But you know life is for learning
We are stardust
We are golden
And we've got to get ourselves
back to the garden
By the time we got to Woodstock
We were half a million strong
And everywhere there was song and celebration
And I dreamed I saw the bombers
Riding shotgun in the sky
And they were turning into butterflies
Above our nation
We are stardust
Billion year old carbon
We are golden
Caught in the devil's bargain
And we've got to get ourselves
back to the garden

"A Matter of Life and Death (1946) is a romantic fantasy film created by the British writing-directing-producing team of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, and set in England during the Second World War. The film stars David Niven, Roger Livesey, Raymond Massey, Kim Hunter and Marius Goring.
The film was originally released in the United States under the title Stairway to Heaven, which derived from the film's most prominent special effect: a broad escalator linking Earth to the afterlife. The decision to film the scenes of the Other World in black and white added to the complications. They were filmed in Three-strip Technicolor, but the colour was not fully developed, giving a pearly hue to the black and white shots, a process cited in the screen credits as "Colour and Dye-Monochrome Processed in Technicolor". This reversed the effect in The Wizard of Oz. Photographic dissolves between "Technicolor Dye-Monochrome" (the Other World) and Three-Strip Technicolor (Earth) are used several times during the film."
Stairway To Heaven
There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold
And she's buying a stairway to heaven.
When she gets there she knows, if the stores are all closed
With a word she can get what she came for.
And she's buying a stairway to heaven.
There's a sign on the wall but she wants to be sure
'Cause you know sometimes words have two meanings.
In a tree by the brook, there's a songbird who sings,
Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven.
it makes me wonder,
it makes me wonder.
There's a feeling I get when I look to the west,
And my spirit is crying for leaving.
In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees,
And the voices of those who stand looking.
it makes me wonder,
it makes me wonder.
And it's whispered that soon, if we all call the tune,
Then the piper will lead us to reason.
And a new day will dawn for those who stand long,
And the forests will echo with laughter.
If there's a bustle in your hedgerow, don't be alarmed now,
It's just a spring clean for the May queen.
Yes, there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run
There's still time to change the road you're on.
And it makes me wonder.
Your head is humming and it won't go, in case you don't know,
The piper's calling you to join him,
Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow, and did you know
Your stairway lies on the whispering wind?
And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our soul.
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How everything still turns to gold.
And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last.
When all are one and one is all
To be a rock and not to roll.
And she's buying a stairway to heaven.
A "stairway" or "star's way"? Stars reside in the Heavens and in Hollywood.
The Sun and Moon the most prominent of the heavenly bodies and the most obvious symbols of power and worship.
Apollo, is the Sun God. The name is also used for the NASA Space Program. Apollo is also the brother of the Moon Goddess Artemis (or Diana). A painting of Apollo was used as the logo for the aptly named "Swan Song" record label. (see below)
Swan Songs: Greek And Celtic Sun Gods
An Image of the Sun God Apollo as a winged angelic being, above.
"In January 1974, Led Zeppelin negotiated an agreement with Atlantic Records to set up Swan Song Records. The label was launched with parties in New York and Los Angeles. A lavish media party was also held at Chislehurst Caves in Kent, England on 31 October 1974, to celebrate the label's first UK release by the Pretty Things, Silk Torpedo (the first US release for Swan Song was the self-titled debut album from Bad Company in June 1974). The company logo was based on Evening also called The Fall of Day (1869) by painter William Rimmer, featuring a picture of the Greek god Apollo."
"In Greek mythology, the swan was a bird consecrated to Apollo, and it was therefore considered a symbol of harmony and beauty and its limited capabilities as a singer were sublimated to those of songbirds."
The God Apollo, the Sun God, seated on his throne above the Heavens. A three headed serpent leads to the throne, like the proverbial "rainbow bridge" or 'stairway to heaven'. The seven planets, like the seven individual notes of the octave musical scale, or the seven colors of the rainbow, are clearly illustrated below.
Apollo is the lord of the Muses, who inspire the arts.
Music as the "Stairway to Heaven" or "Rainbow Bridge of Seven Colors"
Aengus Mac Óg-The One Strong Young Sun
"In Irish mythology, Aengus (Old Irish: Oíngus, Óengus) is a member of the Tuatha Dé Danann and probably a god of love, youth and poetic inspiration.
He is traditionally described as having singing birds circling his head."
Robert Plant & Alison Krauss - Please Read The Letter clip below:
The Sun God's Swan Song
"Aengus went to the lake of the Dragon's Mouth and found 150 girls chained in pairs, his girl, Caer Ibormeith, among them On November 1, Caer and the other girls would turn into swans for a year, every second Samhain. Aengus was told he could marry Caer if he could identify her in her swan form. Aengus turned himself into a swan and they flew away, singing beautiful music that put all listeners asleep for three days and nights"
Gold is the color of the Sun. Gold is the color of hidden treasure, buried by pirates, or concealed by leprechauns at the end of the mythical rainbow. Gold, the color of the treasure the Dragon guards.
A metaphor for an individual's mind attaining a form of clarity or illumination, rather than as meaning a literal treasure. Words can have more than one meaning, after all.
Silver, associated with the Moon, can be used to kill werwolves, according to legend and Hollywood myth. A silver bullet is usually used as an effective remedy for lycanthropy.
The werewolf's condition is due to the Moon, of course.
Superman is a Sun Man or Solar Man, a modern mythological Apollo. He is shown on the Moon, just like where the NASA Apollo 11 mission was shown to be, on television screens that summer.
c. 1400, "a shining;" early 15c., "a manifestation;" mid-15c., "a spiritual illumination," from Old French illustration "apparition, appearance" (13c.) and directly from Latin illustrationem (nominative illustratio) "vivid representation" (in writing), literally "an enlightening," from past participle stem of illustrare "light up, make light, illuminate;" figuratively "make clear, disclose, explain; adorn, render distinguished," from assimilated form of in- "in" (see in- (2)) + lustrare "make bright, illuminate," related to lucere "shine," lux"light" (see light (n.)). Mental sense of "act of making clear in the mind" is from 1580s. Meaning "an illustrative picture" is from 1816.
Note the usage of the two lowercase "i" in the poster art for the film, "The Shining", above. The lowercase "i" resembles the candle and its flame, a miniature sun to see by or be guided by. A light to read by.
Pig Pen, Snoopy & Woodstock
"Pig Pen" of the rock and roll band, The Grateful Dead, at the Woodstock music festival. Pig Pen is also the name of a Peanuts comic strip character, created by Charles Shultz. Similarly, Woodstock is another popular Peanuts character.
"The pigpen cipher (sometimes referred to as the masonic cipher, Freemason's cipher, or tic-tac-toe cipher) is a geometric simple substitution cipher, which exchanges letters for symbols which are fragments of a grid. The example key shows one way the letters can be assigned to the grid."
Snoopy & NASA
"The names originated with Gene Cernan, the mission’s LM Pilot. During simulations, he and Commander Tom Stafford started calling John Young, the mission’s CM Pilot, Charlie Brown (the ‘round-headed kid’ who’s Snoopy’s owner in the comic strip). It started as a joke but soon went beyond the simulators. “We called him Charlie Brown in the office,” Cernan said, and figured that if Young’s call sign would be Charlie Brown, his and Stafford’s call sign in the LM would have to be Snoopy to complete the pair. As an added bonus, the names would give the Silver Snoopy award a little pizzazz and exposure, making it a little more meaningful for the workers who earned it."
"Due to the use of their names as call signs, the Peanuts characters Charlie Brown and Snoopy became semi-official mascots for the mission. Peanuts creator Charles Schulz also drew some special mission-related artwork for NASA."
"NASA asked Schulz for permissions to use his two famous characters as call signs for the mission, something the artist considered a highlight of his career. Some of Schulz’s friends brought up the “what ifs” – what if the mission failed and a crew of dead astronauts was forever synonymous with his characters? Schultz replied simply that if the astronauts could risk their lives on the mission, he could risk his characters. Charlie Brown and Snoopy became semi-official mascots for Apollo 10, even though they weren’t included in the official mission logo. People brought Snoopy dolls in to NASA to lay on top of the crew’s simulators.."
"Upon reaching lunar orbit, Young remained alone in the Command Module (CM) Charlie Brown while Stafford and Cernan flew separately in the LM Snoopy. The LM crew demonstrated their craft's radar and engines, rode out a momentary gyration in the lunar lander's motion (due to a faulty switch setting), and surveyed the Apollo 11 landing site in the Sea of Tranquility."
Apollo 11 Branded Son Rising in The Shining
Like a modern Theseus, Danny Torrance survives the challenge of the labyrinth, unlike his father.
Danny seems to be a solar figure. He is labelled with the name of the Sun God and his room, or "house" is labelled with rainbows, another solar symbol.
Danny's imaginary friend is named "Tony". Tony is reminiscent of the word "tone". Tone signifies musical notes or colors, in other words, the name Tony could represent art itself in some way. Tony might be thought of as Danny's inner creative force, personified. Tony is short for Anthony of course, brining to mind St. Anthony.
A scene from Stanley Kubrick's film, The Shining. Here the door to the child's room is decorated with seemingly innocuous decals. Yet each one has a double meaning. Woodstock is a comic strip character, from Charles Shultz's Peanuts long running syndicated comic strip series, as wells being the name of the event that took place in Bethel, NY. Snoopy, another Peanut's character, is also the name of the Apollo 10 lunar module, which surveyed the Apollo 11 landing site.
The rainbow, a Wizard of Oz or biblical reference. Dopey, the Disney character and of course Mickey Mouse himself are also represented in sticker form. Dopey might be an allusion to "dope" as in the nickname for cannabis. Or perhaps the "dopey" mass public who are "asleep" to the occulted truth of the world.
Mickey Mouse as a Walt Disney reference, when combined with the obvious NASA Apollo references, sprinkled throughout the film, would then logically lead to the conclusion that Stanley Kubrick is referring to Walt Disney himself, and his promotion of the NASA technology and the space race, during the height of the cold war. Video clips below, circa the 19650's.
Walt Disney meets a Nazi Rocketeer and Fellow Film Enthusiast
"Walt Disney began hosting his own television show for ABC in 1954 in an unusual contract: Disney provided ABC with a weekly hour-long television program in exchange for funding for the construction of Disneyland. As a result, the television show was also originally named Disneyland. The anthology series has since gone through a number of name changes over the years: Walt Disney Presents, Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color, The Wonderful World of Disney, Disney's Wonderful World, Walt Disney, The Disney Sunday Movie, and The Magical World of Disney. The series spanned an incredible 54 years—13 seasons of which were hosted by Walt Disney, himself.
With a combination of documentary footage and animation, the science and history of rockets, and the effects of space travel on man are illustrated.

Nazi's liked science fiction films too. Fritz Lang was a favorite. His film, "Frau im Mond" was popular among the rocket scientists in Wernher von Braun's inner circle at the Verein für Raumschiffahrt.
Early Stage Magic, Where's the rabbit?
People as Animals/Animals as People
Again we have an example of animals as metaphor for human beings or human attributes, like wisdom, (the owl). The mass public needs a "shepherd" or gatekeeper as they are herded as sheep. "Sheeple" is a popular term used today to describe our fellow human kind.
The popularity of the zombie (or ghoul) is funny as the obvious metaphor of the zombie is a reference to the manipulated and unconscious public who do not understand how things really work. Who are as if asleep to the realities of the (artificial) world.
There seems to be a conscious use of words here. "Wood" "stock" (as in animal stock a pen, a fenced in area, the youth were like pigs, rolling around in the mud), "swans" and "songbirds". Mickey Mouse, Snoopy, cartoon characters and childhood's end, are all alluded to.
"Bird", like the expression "chick", is used as a word meaning "girl", are all allusions to people.
Oswald the Disney Rabbit
"Dante's nine spheres of Heaven are the Moon, Mercury, Venus, the Sun, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, the Fixed Stars, and the Primum Mobile. These are associated by Dante with the nine levels of the angelic hierarchy. Dante also relies on traditional associations, such as the one between Venus and romantic love. The first three spheres (which fall within the shadow of the Earth) are associated with deficient forms of Fortitude, Justice, and Temperance. The next four are associated with positive examples of Prudence, Fortitude, Justice, and Temperance; while Faith, Hope, and Love appear together in the eighth sphere."
Saturn, the last of the Classical Seven Planets, Represents The Final Ring or Boundary, (Or Circle) before the Empyrean
2001: Saturn Becomes Jupiter
"Although the novel and film were developed simultaneously, the novel follows early drafts of the film, from which the final version deviated. These changes were often for practical reasons relating to what could be filmed economically, and a few were due to differences of opinion between Kubrick and Clarke. The most notable differences are a change in the destination planet from Saturn to Jupiter, and the nature of the sequence of events leading to Hal's demise. Stylistic differences may be more important than content differences. Of lesser importance are the appearance of the monolith, the age of Hal, and the novel giving names to various spacecraft, prehistoric apes, and Hal's inventor."
Dave Bowman, the character from the film, Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, famously recites those words as he passes through the threshold as represented by the star gate. He is in the process of transcending his humanity as he knows it and is "evolving" or changing into a new type of being He is "reborn" as a babe, with fresh eyes he now regards the world, (and presumably its history) at the end of the film.
Hollywood is "Full of Stars"
"The Empyrean was thus used as a name for the firmament, and in Christian literature, notably the Divine Comedy, for the dwelling-place of God, the blessed, celestial beings so divine they are made of pure light, and the source of light and creation. The word is used both as a noun and as an adjective, but empyreal is an alternate adjective form as well. Having the same Greek origin are the scientific words empyreuma and empyreumatic, applied to the characteristic smell of the burning or charring of vegetable or animal matter."
"The celestial equator is a great circle on the imaginary celestial sphere, in the same plane as the Earth's equator. In other words, it is a projection of the terrestrial equator out into space. As a result of the Earth's axial tilt, the celestial equator is inclined by 23.4° with respect to the ecliptic plane.
An observer standing on the Earth's equator visualizes the celestial equator as a semicircle passing directly overhead through the zenith. As the observer moves north (or south), the celestial equator tilts towards the opposite horizon. The celestial equator is defined to be infinitely distant (since it is on the celestial sphere); thus the observer always sees the ends of the semicircle disappear over the horizon exactly due east and due west, regardless of the observer's position on Earth. (At the poles, though, the celestial equator would be parallel to the horizon.) At all latitudes the celestial equator appears perfectly straight because the observer is only finitely far from the plane of the celestial equator but infinitely far from the celestial equator itself.
Celestial objects near the celestial equator are visible worldwide, but they culminate the highest in the sky in the tropics."
The celestial equator currently passes through these constellations:
• Canis Minor
Bowman refers us to Orion, the archer. David, the biblical sling-man, the slayer of the giant and Hebrew king. The astronauts, derived from the ancient Greek, argonaut, are flung into the heavens like stones from a sling. Or like arrows from a bow. A bow like God's sky bow, a rainbow, a "gift", or rather more like the "bow" on a gift. God’s Covenant With Noah is represented by the rainbow. The gift is the post-flood world that has been renewed or cleansed, (baptized) by God, and it is wrapped with a ribbon, that is tied into a "rain" bow. The gift of the new or reborn world. A new "verse" in God's Old Song.
"In Greek mythology, Iris is the personification of the rainbow and messenger of the gods. She is also known as one of the goddesses of the sea and the sky. Iris links the gods to humanity. She travels with the speed of wind from one end of the world to the other, and into the depths of the sea and the underworld."
Astrological (a star-logic-El) reasoning or "seasoning":
"When the disguised Odysseus returns, Penelope announces in her long interview with the disguised hero that whoever can string Odysseus's rigid bow and shoot an arrow through twelve axe shafts may have her hand. "For the plot of the Odyssey, of course, her decision is the turning point, the move that makes possible the long-predicted triumph of the returning hero". Odysseus' identity is discovered by the housekeeper, Eurycleia, as she is washing his feet and discovers an old scar Odysseus received during a boar hunt. Odysseus swears her to secrecy, threatening to kill her if she tells anyone.
The return of Ulysses
When the contest of the bow begins, none of the suitors is able to string the bow of Apollo but then, after all the suitors have given up, the disguised Odysseus comes along, bends the bow, shoots the arrow, and wins the contest. Having done so, he proceeds to slaughter the suitors (beginning with Antinous whom he finds drinking from Odysseus' cup) with help from Telemachus and Odysseus' servants Eumaeus the swineherd and Philoetius the cowherd. Odysseus tells the serving women who slept with the suitors to clean up the mess of corpses and then has those women hanged in terror. He tells Telemachus that he will replenish his stocks by raiding nearby islands. Odysseus has now revealed himself in all his glory (with a little makeover by Athena); yet Penelope cannot believe that her husband has really returned—she fears that it is perhaps some god in disguise, as in the story of Alcmene—and tests him by ordering her servant Euryclea to move the bed in their wedding-chamber. Odysseus protests that this cannot be done since he made the bed himself and knows that one of its legs is a living olive tree. Penelope finally accepts that he truly is her husband, a moment that highlights their homophrosýnē (like-mindedness)."
Lebowski- God's Sky Bow
Dude Means Fool
Another "bow man" of sorts. From the film, "The Big Lebowski" by the Coen brothers, features the character, "The Dude". His real name is Lebowski. Le, or "EL" as in God. Bow and sky are the other two words we can clearly discern in this name. This character could then represent the "bow of God". We have a double meaning with the word bow. It isa a bow as a weapon, as in bow and arrow. The arrow, the ray of light from the sun. Rays are the arrows of the Sun God in mythology. Note the use of the Valkyrie garbed character, Maude Lebowski, in the poster art. The "Dude" is part of a bowling team.
This reminds me of the Washington Irving story, A story about someone who falls asleep and only awakens after many years have passed, after bowling with elves ( from the word EL). Rip Van Winkle would then represent someone who has spent a great deal of their adult life, "asleep" or unconsciousness of the workings of the true world, caught in "maya".
The word, "DUDE" has its origins with the "Late 19th century: probably from German dialect Dude meaning, ''FOOL."
So here we clearly see that the authors of this work named their main character with a moniker that had a double meaning of: "FOOL" or "COOL".
We also have the idea of God's bow being the rainbow, from the Noah, flood myth. The result of the rays of light and the moisture in the atmosphere.

Your Eyes are Wide Shut as You Overlook the Obvious
"The Fool is shown as a young man, walking unknowingly toward the brink of a precipice. In the Rider-Waite deck, he is also portrayed as having with him a small dog. The Fool holds a white rose (a symbol of freedom from baser desires) in one hand, and in the other a small bundle of possessions, representing untapped collective knowledge" "Eyes Wide Shut" or "Overlooking the obvious" a double meaning of a precipice, as illustrated in the card above.

Shining in The Light
The Overlook Hotel is a "Hotel California". The hotel would seem to represent the corporate enterprise known as the United States. Jack Nicholson's character is hired by the representative of this power. He is supposed to over see the Overlook Hotel during the winter months. The time when the Sun's power is the weakest in the northern hemisphere.
Jack Nicholson's character is enigmatically found in an old photo revealed at the film's end. Like the scene in the hotel bar above, he was always part of this "show". Once you come in, you can never leave. The "corporate entity", "Uncle Sam", or "Satan", owns your image and voice and whatever other intellectual property you singed over to "it". Every artists working for "the man" must sign the contract with the proverbial "Devil", who then own the resulting work for an "eternity".
The Overlook Hotel
The two meaning of the word "overlook". The hotel's name from the film, "The Shining". One meaning refers to a location from where one can see down at the landscape below. The other meaning is to not see something that is evident. This other meaning refers to the concept of something being "occulted" or hidden in plain sight. As in "Eyes Wide Shut". Robert Plant's Stairway to Heaven lyrics do seem to be a Rosetta stone of sorts.
Stars are seen in the heavens. Hollywood is full of stars. The fabled stairway a metaphor for the path to the entertainment industry stardom perhaps? Thus the reference to Satan, which is an allusion to contracts, as well as the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences abbreviation.
Shapes of Things
The pyramid shape again. The gold statue OSCAR is a Sun man, a "Samson". Gold the metal of the Sun. The logo also resembles the capital letter "A".
Superman "S" design from the 1940's or so. Here presented upside down for comparison to the other two designs. Notice the use of negative space as well.
The scarlet letter comes to mind. Notice the negative space above, creates the the lower case "i". This is "A.i.", like the film and logo design below. This represents the human consciousness transcending its simple animal nature, through the power of education. The tools of education may change, print or video, audio or even cuisine, are all vehicles for culture and its civilizing influence on the animal human.
THE HOUSES of THE HOLY
"Let me take you to the movies. Can I take you to the show?
Let me be yours ever truly. Can I make your garden grow?
From the houses of the holy, you can watch the white doves go
From the door comes Satan's daughter, and it only goes to show.
There's an angel on my shoulder, In my hand a sword of gold
Let me wander through your garden. And the seeds of love I'll sow.
So the world is spinning faster. Are you dizzy when you're stoned
Let the music be your master. Will you heed the master's call?
Said there ain't no use in crying. Cause it will only, only drive you mad
Does it hurt to hear them lying? Was this the only world you had?"

"The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences or NATAS was created in 1955 to advance the arts and sciences of television. Headquartered in New York, NATAS's membership is national and the organization has local chapters around the country. It was also known as the National Television Academy until 2007."
Go for the gold! A gold Olympic medal or a gold statue, either will do. Gold the color of the Sun.
The OSCAR™ statue. Oscar, the name is derived from "two elements in Irish: the first, os, means "deer"; the second element, cara, means "friend". The name is borne by a character in Irish mythology—Oscar, grandson of Fionn Mac Cumhail. The name was popularised in the 18th century by James Macpherson, creator of 'Ossianic poetry'. Today the name is associated with Scandinavia because Napoleon was an admirer of Macpherson's work and gave the name to his godson, Joseph Bernadotte, who later became Oscar I, King of Sweden. Consequently, at the time many Swedes were named Oscar. The name was given to more than a half-dozen members of Scandinavian royal houses.
The given name Oscar does also[clarification needed] derive from two Old English elements meaning "god" and "spear"
The surname McCusker originates as an Anglicised form of the Gaelic Mac Oscair. The latter surname may originate from Oscar, or else from a Gaelicised form of the Old Norse Ásgeirr (a personal name itself composed of the elements meaning "god" and "spear")." Like the ray or arrow of light from the Sun's "bow" or "arc".
The Devil Made Me Do It
"The Devil and Daniel Webster is a 1941 fantasy film, adapted by Stephen Vincent Benét and Dan Totheroh from Benét's short story, "The Devil and Daniel Webster". The film's title was changed to All That Money Can Buy to avoid confusion with another film released by RKO that year, The Devil and Miss Jones, and later had the title restored on some prints. It has also been released under the titles Mr. Scratch, Daniel and the Devil and Here Is a Man. The film stars Edward Arnold, Walter Huston, and James Craig."
""The Devil and Daniel Webster" is a short story by Stephen Vincent Benét. This Faustian tale was inspired by Washington Irving's short story "The Devil and Tom Walker." Benet's story centers on a New Hampshire farmer who sells his soul to the Devil and is defended by Daniel Webster, a fictional version of the famous statesman, lawyer, and orator."
"The Devil and Tom Walker" is a short story by Washington Irving that first appeared in his 1824 collection Tales of a Traveller, as part of the "Money-Diggers" section. The story is very similar to the German legend of Faust.
The story starts with the legend of William Kidd the pirate. It is rumored that Kidd had buried a large treasure a forest in colonial Massachusetts. Kidd made a deal with the devil to protect his money. The devil's conditions are unknown. Kidd died never able to reclaim his money, but the devil has protected it ever since.
The story continues around 1727. Tom Walker, a greedy, selfish miser of a man, cherishes money along with his shrewish and equally greedy wife. They lived in a tarnished looking house, that had stood alone and had an air of starvation. This is until he takes a walk in the swamp at an old Indian fortress (a relic of King Philip's War of 1675/1678), and starts up a conversation with the Devil incarnate (referred to as "Old Scratch" in the story). Old Scratch appears as a lumberjack or a woodsman chopping trees, each with a prominent and wealthy colonialist's name branded on the trunk. One rotted and soon-to-fall tree has the name of a deacon who grew wealthy "trading" with the Indians. Another fallen trunk has that of a wealthy seaman rumored to be a pirate. Old Scratch strikes a deal with Tom Walker, offering the riches hidden in the swamp by Captain Kidd in exchange for Tom's soul. Tom agrees to think about it and returns hom
During the governorship of Jonathan Belcher (1730-1741), speculation runs rampant, and Walker's business flourishes. Becoming a member of the local stock exchange, Tom buys a big house and a coach but furnishes neither even though he has the money (he is so miserly he even half starves his horses). Tom never tires of swindling people until he suddenly becomes fearful about the afterlife. He then becomes fiercely and loudly dedicated to God, always keeping two Bibles at hand—thinking that any sin on his neighbors "account" is a "credit" to his own. He even has his best riding horse saddled and buried upside down so that he might flee when Old Scratch comes to collect his due from Tom."
Boby Darin performs Hi-De-Ho, above. Singing about singing a contract.
The Eagles song, "The Hotel California" is another hotel, where, like the hotel from the film "The Shining', one comes in, but like the infamous "roach motel" can "never leave". Once you sign the contract with "the Devil" or Hollywood, they own your image, or voice or intellectual property , "for eternity".
A rainbow reference in Stanley Kubrick's "Eyes Wide Shut" below. The rainbow can be thought of as a symbol for art itself. The seven individual notes of the musical octave or the colors a painter uses to paint with come to mind. Here the name of the costume and tuxedo rental shop is "Rainbow". Art can be used to trap or free the mind. This scene from the film "Eyes Wide Shut" has to do with the shop owner pimping his daughter out to tourists. Metaphorically art is being used to trap the mind at an animalistic level of consciousness rather than helping the individual transcend his or her own animalistic or lower levels of consciousness. Sex is an easy tool to use.

In many ways Led Zeppelin was born "at Woodstock". That event in Bethel, was a "Stairway" that would pave the way for the next decade's phenomenal Rock & Roll success led by Mr. Plant, a "neo-Aengus". The Woodstock event created the marketing environment that would allow for bands like Led Zeppelin to succeed. Led Zeppelin itself would not survive the decade of the seventies, sadly.

"Pythagoras conceived the universe to be an immense monochord, with its single string connected at its upper end to absolute spirit and at its lower end to absolute matter--in other words, a cord stretched between heaven and earth. Counting inward from the circumference of the heavens, Pythagoras, according to some authorities, divided the universe into nine parts; according to others, into twelve parts. The twelvefold system was as follows: The first division was called the empyrean, or the sphere of the fixed stars, and was the dwelling place of the immortals. The second to twelfth divisions were (in order) the spheres of Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, the sun, Venus, Mercury, and the moon, and fire, air, water, and earth. This arrangement of the seven planets (the sun and moon being regarded as planets in the old astronomy) is identical with the candlestick symbolism of the Jews--the sun in the center as the main stem with three planets on either side of it.
The names given by the Pythagoreans to the various notes of the diatonic scale were, according to Macrobius, derived from an estimation of the velocity and magnitude of the planetary bodies. Each of these gigantic spheres as it rushed endlessly through space was believed to sound a certain tone caused by its continuous displacement of the æthereal diffusion. As these tones were a manifestation of divine order and motion, it must necessarily follow that they partook of the harmony of their own source. "The assertion that the planets in their revolutions round the earth uttered certain sounds differing according to their respective 'magnitude, celerity and local distance,' was commonly made by the Greeks. Thus Saturn, the farthest planet, was said to give the gravest note, while the Moon, which is the nearest, gave the sharpest. 'These sounds of the seven planets, and the sphere of the fixed stars, together with that above us [Antichthon], are the nine Muses, and their joint symphony is called Mnemosyne.'" (See The Canon.)This quotation contains an obscure reference to the ninefold division of the universe previously mentioned."
