Authority comes in many forms. Kings and Queens and Popes and Priests and Teachers and Police all come to mind.

We overlook the religion we all tend to adhere to without our conscious knowledge. We trust the News, we trust the words of the talk show hosts, news journalists and DJs. We believe the newspaper headlines and word of mouth hearsay that is sourced in the “NEWS”.

We do not realize that most of the NEWS is not true. We do not realize that what most of us consider to be real knowledge about our world is noting more than "faith -Based" reasoning, illogically founded on the words of talking heads on screens of one kind or another. Newspapers and even the University system are less about truth and more about indoctrination. 

Government means mind control. The television and now the internet, as well as all other media forms, are the Medium for Government or behavioral control. The Governments, the Federal, State and County and even more local, are the rackets and crime. These corporate bodies do not work for us and exist to deprive us of our freedom, not grant or protect it. These institutions do not exist to work for us, and any good they do for us, comes with the long historical paper chains of the feudal wage slaves ystem.

There’s good reason why colors are so important to the costuming of the Royals. There’s good reason why tie dyes never go out of style and rainbows and led screens are so amazing to look at.

Human beings love looking at colorful objects.

Of all our senses, the sense of sight is the most overlooked as our primary means of interacting with our environment. The sense of sight is also the means of our mental imprisonment. The visual medium is the medium of the social control system. This is why the Yellow Journal Blueprint emphasizes the use of colorful imagery, The original Wizard of Oz film is famous for starting off in black and white and then going full color, and then back to black and white at the end, much like the song Stairway to Heaven would go from acoustic to electric and back to acoustic again. A form of the Hobbit’s “There and Back Again”, or ‘Coming Full Circle”.

Of course we can use the same means of imprisonment to free ourselves. We can learn to see through the art that imprisons our minds.

Human beings love color so much that we tend to tattoo colorful imagery on our bodies, wear colorful makeup and clothing. Some of us color our hair in rainbow shades of fun. And there’s nothing wrong with any of this. We enjoy looking at the natural world of flowers and tress and colorful birds and all sorts of wonderful sun rises and sun sets. Our natural world is filled with incredible beauty and we are fortunate enough to possess the sense of sight.

What most of us might not realize is how important and overlooked is the power of sight to effect our own behavior. We monkey or copy the behavior of those we see. We tend to dress like those we admire, or at least we are encouraged to adopt visual patterns of behavior of the celebrities who are sold to us as representatives of our culture. Images that are presented in color are more powerful than black and white imagery. The moving image, silent and in black and white is a clever trick. The full color image with stereo sound is a magical social control mechanism.

The study of color psychology is something worth looking into. The thing is the use of color goes back to the origins of civilization itself. Color psychology is as old as the art of dying fabric, or similar art. Human psychology (in general) originates with the origins of civilization. 

Color psychology is the study of hues as a determinant of human behavior. Color influences perceptions that are not obvious, such as the taste of food. Colors can also enhance the effectiveness of placebos. For example, red or orange pills are generally used as stimulants. Color can indeed influence a person; however, it is important to remember that these effects differ between people. Factors such as gender, age, and culture can influence how an individual perceives color. For example, males reported that red colored outfits made women seem more attractive, while women answered that the color of a male's outfit did not affect his attractiveness.

Color psychology is also widely used in marketing and branding. Many marketers see color as an important part of marketing because color can be used to influence consumers' emotions and perceptions of goods and services. Companies also use color when deciding on brand logos. These logos seem to attract more customers when the color of the brand logo matches the personality of the goods or services, such as the color pink being heavily used on Victoria's Secret branding. However, colors are not only important for logos and products, but also for window displays in stores. Research shows that warm colors tended to attract spontaneous purchasers, despite cooler colors being more favorable.”

The images of the celebrities are very controlled and highly manipulated. There are layers of illusion woven with some small doses of  truth and this creates the biography and persona of the so-called film, television, news, pop, music or other sort of celebrity "Star".

We are supposed to look up to those people as successful examples of human beings. We are supposed to emulate their behavior. We must avoid this sort of idolatry. We must learn to ignore the messenger and learn to appreciate reading the message.

We think we know who the famous people really are, but we only know what we are shown and told. We know nothing about these people and their real lives. We only know the propaganda or public relations noise.

We can not be sure we know who is who.

Are we surrounded by minions? It sure feels like it. We like them. They are really cute and designed for commercial business. These sweet little yellow products just can't help but fly off the shelves. We are lucky to have infinite supply online.

Yes the Defense Information agents are online. We can't help but think they are 'virtually' among around us. How many so-called 'truther' is actually one of these professionally trained Defense Information Specialists or agents?

These are the same people that keep things like the UFO scam alive. This school dates back to the late 1940's. These guys created what we think of as modern communications. Here we can see from where and why - the tabloid style press gets a boost. Why this style is so encouraged, and why it has always been this way. These techniques of behavioral manipulation go back to the earliest days of organized religion. We must have a continual mystery to ponder and authorities to turn to for answers. This is why the so-called occult subjects are so prevalent in our media. Occult just means hidden and apocalypse just means revelation.

Here we reveal the truth- what you see on screen, in print and hear on the radio is more than likely false, especially if it involves some kind of celebrity and is a story that is repeated endlessly in various formats of years to come. The more local and less reported the news the more real it likely is. The bigger and more global or national or even state news, the more likely it is fake.

We need to be kept in a perpetual state of fear so we believe we need the various layers of the social control mechanism and criminal racket we call government. We do not need to pay taxes, nor pay into social security nor any of it. We are purposely dumbed down by a media beast that seeks to use us all up and spit us all out. The state run news media does not work to enlighten us, it works to keep us enslaved and believing we need government and that the political elections matter. What we see on screens, especially the politics and war, is very fake and scripted.

The News and all the talk shows, comedic or otherwise, truly shape and mould public perception creating a false and augmented reality. The mass media beast is a audio visual religion complete with idols, dead celebrity stars and everything a religion could wish for.

David Susskind: Television Post World War Two Communications Minion

"Susskind was born in Manhattan, and grew up in Brookline, Massachusetts. He attended the University of Wisconsin–Madison and then Harvard University, graduating with honors in 1942. He served during World War IIand, as communications officer on an attack transport, USS Mellette, saw action at Iwo Jima and Okinawa.[2]

Career[edit]

His first job after the war was as a press agent for Warner Brothers. Next he was a talent agent for Century Artists, ultimately ending up in the powerhouse Music Corporation of America's newly minted television programming department, managing Dinah ShoreJerry Lewis, and others. In New York, Susskind formed Talent Associates, representing creators of material rather than performers. Ultimately, Susskind produced movies, stage plays and television programs.[1]

Talk shows[edit]

In 1954, Susskind became producer of the NBC legal drama Justice, based on case files of the Legal Aid Society of New York. His program, Open End, began in 1958 on New York City's commercial independent station WNTA-TV, channel 13, the predecessor to WNET, and was appropriately titled: the program continued until Susskind or his guests were too tired to continue.[3]

In 1961, Open End was constrained to two hours and went into national syndication. The show was retitled The David Susskind Show for its telecast on Sunday night, October 2, 1966.[4] In the 1960s it was the first nationally broadcast television talk show to feature people speaking out against American involvement in the Vietnam War. In the 1970s it was the first nationally broadcast television talk show to feature people speaking out for gay rights. The show continued until its New York outlet cancelled it in 1986, approximately six months before Susskind died.[5]

During his almost three decade run, Susskind covered many controversial topics of the day, such as race relations, transsexualism and the Vietnam War. His interview of Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev, which aired in October 1960, during the height of the Cold War, generated national attention.[6] It is one of the very few talk show telecasts from the era that was preserved and can be viewed today.[5]

In 1961, Susskind conducted a series of interviews with former President Harry Truman in Truman's hometown of Independence, Missouri. After picking Truman up at his home to take him to the Truman Presidential Library for the interviews over a number of days, Susskind asked Truman why he hadn't been invited into the home. According to presidential historian Michael Beschloss, Truman flatly told Susskind, "This is Bess's house" and that there had never been nor would there ever be a Jewish guest in there.[7]

Joyce Davidson, with whom Susskind was in a relationship, began working as a co-producer of a television talk show Susskind hosted locally in New York called Hot Line in June 1964. It was a different show from the Open End talk show. Hot Line was the first television show to use the recently invented ten-second broadcast delay to amplify viewer phone calls on the air.[5] Davidson screened viewer phone calls.[5] She also made the first approach to some of the people who appeared as guests on Hot Line, including Malcolm X, whom she invited for Hot Line immediately after he gave a speech at The Town Hall.[5]

Notwithstanding a perhaps courageous willingness to present challenging political issues of his times to audiences, a thorough analysis of his editorial perspective would be incomplete without considering recently unearthed film footage of Susskind's 1968 appearance on The Eamonn Andrews Show, when he excoriated Muhammad Ali with withering criticism for refusing to be conscripted into the U.S. military for the Vietnam War.[8]

Susskind was also a noted producer, with scores of movies, plays, and TV programs to his credit. His legacy is that of a producer of intelligent material at a time when TV had left its golden years behind and had firmly planted its feet in programming which had wide appeal, whether or not it was worth watching. In addition, the students are taught the fundamentals of news, journalism, and how to write and copy-edit in accordance with the Associated Press (AP) Styleguide.

The Public Affairs Expeditionary Course is a ten-day, intensive follow-on course to PAQC. Students are expected to have a basic working knowledge and experience in PA as the course is focused more on the application of PA skills in a field environment.

Journalism courses

Journalism classes feature basic writing skills and include a headline style known at the school as "headline-ese", a total style for writing and developing headlines. Students are taught a variety of writing styles and formats such as news, sports and feature writing.

Photojournalism courses focus on composition, exposure, and general camera operation skills. Flash photography is introduced in the basic photography course. Students learn advanced photo-editing, composition and other techniques not taught in basic photojournalism classes.

For military print journalists, DINFOS offers the 12-week Basic Public Affairs Specialist Course (BPASC), a 26-week online BPASC and three-week Editors' Course. U.S. Army students are awarded the Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) designator of 46Q, and U.S. Marine Corps students are awarded the MOS 4341 Combat Correspondent.

For military Broadcast journalists, DINFOS offers the Broadcast Communication Specialist Course. Broadcasters begin by attending several weeks of BWAS - Basic Writing and Announcing Skills. If the class requirements are met, students may continue into Radio and Television broadcasting classes. U.S. Army students are awarded the MOS designator of 46R.

Students in all courses hail from all branches of the U.S. military and reserve as well as International military students.

Equipment maintenance courses

The Basic Television Equipment Maintenance (BTVEM) course includes apprentice level instruction in the repair of all types of studio and transmission equipment. Students also learn how to maintain the AVID non-linear digital editing systems. The U.S. Army MOS 25R and the Air Force AFSC 2E134 is awarded upon completion. Since December 2006 Air Force class graduated, DINFOS no longer trains Air Force personnel in the BTVEM course.

The Broadcast Radio and Television Systems Maintenance course is an advanced level course where students learn the ins and outs of American Forces Radio and Television Service (AFRTS) engineering standards and practices.

Both maintenance courses are nationally accredited by the Society of Broadcast Engineers (SBE). Upon completion of either course with an average GPA of at least 85%, students are certified by the SBE as broadcast technologists (CBT)."

The Old Media Becomes the Content of the New Media:

History Channel, The Science channel, The Military Channel, all the means of promoting false perceptions of the world. This article looks at the screen that filters reality. YOUTUBE is the current propaganda arm of the government as we can see. It reinforces the idea that these wars we've only seen on screens are real. They are not. They are nothing but highly edited & highly scripted propaganda.

This scheme relies on there being both paid minions who promote obvious lies as truth, and the plan relies on the fact that we tend to copy each other's behavior, so we ourselves end up posting and repeating propaganda. In this manner we lie to ourselves and our fellow human beings.  In this manner we act like agents of the government. In this way Government is mind control.

Why would the military permit us to see real footage of war? Why would anyone in actual combat bother to also film it? The most obvious answer is for propaganda purposes. Why would YOUTUBE allow terrorist and other 'enemy' videos to be shown? YOUTUBE is aiding and abetting the enemy and the terrorists.

YOUTUBE can be accused of traitorous activity. Allowing these videos to stay online for all to see only aids and abets the enemy. 

YOUTUBE and any other social media that posts such videos and other like material, are only helping terrorists recruit. Does this really make sense? Are mainstream internet and news organizations really giving free platform to terrorists? These institutions end up providing free advertising for the enemy. This is cartoonish reasoning and clearly a con.

FAKING THE NEWS

We know it's unwise to trust what we see on screens or in print. It's easy to Fake It. Fakeology is art and pseudoscience. Truth gets mixed with fiction and we have trouble telling which is which. When Hollywood actors are involved, and the news story is promoted everywhere, we should be very suspicious that what we are seeing is more theater than not. Celebrities have long been associated with various causes. This is something we have been conditioned to accept as normal. We are not to realize that the entire multimedia beast is indeed one huge example of yellow journalism, complete with its use of cartoon characters, appeals to sympathy, sensational claims, fake so-called experts and so on.

We know that at installations like the Defense Information School, the military trains agents, actors, voice over people, radio disc jockeys, comedians, journalists and behind the scenes production staff. This is where yellow journalism techniques are taught to trained agents who have security clearances. All news media is nothing but yellow journalism, (see definition below). We can see how things really work now. Yellow Journalism is the method for all of this. These sensationalized techniques really date back to the earliest days of religion, obviously. These are basic military style propaganda techniques designed to win a so-called war, before ever having to fire a shot.

The need or motive to fake news and wars dates back to the earliest days of our so-called civilization. Medieval castle walls were sold as protection to the mass of peasantry. We have to believe we must pay taxes for protection from one kind of bogeyman or another.

"In May 2003 Katz published an anonymous semi-autobiography entitled Terrorist Hunter: The Extraordinary Story of a Woman Who Went Undercover to Infiltrate the Radical Islamic Groups Operating in America. She appeared in disguise on the CBS newsmagazine, "60 Minutes", to promote her book using the pseudonym "Sarah", and wearing a wig and a fake nose,  to protect herself and her family from retaliation from groups that she said were linked to al-QaedaHamasIslamic Jihad, and Hezbollah.[1] In the book she tries to reveal what she sees as the gravity and extent of the presence of Islamic fundamentalism in America, and that government agencies still do not all work together as one to fight terrorism, but instead hide information from each other, try to take over investigations, and even deliberately slow down terrorism investigations.

We have to try to free our fellow slaves from this controlling artifact. This magical icon projects idols that we the masses are meant to emulate or fear or follow blindly. Behavior manipulation is an old art and is something that we are not usually aware of. We might not even notice when we unconsciously manipulate others. Our human physiology (one we share with animals) means we copy the behavior of those we see. Monkey see, monkey do, parrot hear parrot say. Simon Says Seductive Slogans. We tend to think only the advertising is meant to manipulate and seduce us in one way or another. This is akin to the magician's assistant on stage. We pay attention to the manipulation in  the commercials but ignore the manipulation that is quite obvious in the news and daytime talk shows, and all the rest of the media. It's there whether intentional or not. That's the beauty of our brain's neural composition. The 'mirror neurons' allow us to be easily manipulated. We need not be conscious of the new behavior being fostered on us, and most of the time we are not and this is the exact idea. It is when we notice the logical fallacies and inconsistencies in the narratives presented on the screens, do we then start to wake up and notice the memes that are not so subtly being propagated. 

We are conditioned to think an activity is natural and logical if everyone else is doing it. We know this is a fallacy.

Generating Fake Outrage

The same old script, the eternal race war is acted out once again. Here we have the NFL taking part in the grand social experiment. The NFL of course is part of the Military Industrial Complex™. 

Protesting the National Anthem by kneeling is absurd. Kneeling is a sign of respect. We are supposed to kneel to our superiors! We are to kneel to the Queen or Pope. See how this is actually a sign of deeper respect for the flag? It doesn't matter what the supposed rules for the National Anthem are. That itself is absurd. We should stop playing such childish games.

The Royals are children forever playing Halloween. Let's round them up and let them live out their lives on a pretty estate somewhere, where they cannot bother us anymore. We can try to treat their mental disorders without imprisoning them. Banishment to a nice tropical island sounds like a good way to go. We do not need to emulate the ridiculous prison system. In fact we need to end the modern prison system as we know it.  The modern prison system is nothing but another social manipulation experiment we foot the bill for. We should only limit the freedom of this who kill or continue to steal or otherwise pose a logical threat to the rest of us and we should simply limit their mobility rather than confining them to the cartoonish prison life we are so accustomed to seeing on screens. We should try to actually rehabilitate our fellow human beings rather than punish.

We really need to deprogram them so they can wake up to  their true nature and imaginative character. Imagine the world we could create if our imaginations were freed from this cartoon control system.

Soldiers and military personal and other government workers need to wake up to! They are the most programmed by this control system. The appeals to sympathy must be ignored. These men and women end up getting used as virtual props. It is a disgusting display of advertising. Soldiers can get wounded playing war-games. Friendly fire is another real possibility as well asa accidents during explosives training and even engineering accidents. There are many explanations for the wounded. It need not be actual combat.

It's not that we shouldn't feel sympathy for the individual, we should. It's that this gets confused with a false sense of patriotism. This we must not allow. This is the road to madness. The United States is a cooperation and a racket. It is a con job and a crime.

Some might be unwitting as we all have been, and some might be on the proverbial payroll or even of make believe, fairy tale, blue blood lineage.Keep in mind if you see it on a screen, there’s good chance it is deceptive in some way. Media suave may tailor their message for the audience. This may or may not mean they are paid dis-information agents, it does not matter. Like a professional on air talent, which he is. We do not know him personally so we can only refer to this, his on screen, shadow and light, persona. In any case, it's not the man we take issue with. It's the message. Whether intentional or not, we see how the alt media ends up acting exactly like the old media and how nothing really changes. Again we must empathize, we think James Corbett does a really great job in producing his videos, it's just the content is read from the same old script. MTV scripted the Real World. And based on the article it seems that the people we saw on camera might not be the people they claim to be. They could hire actors to portray those who signed the 30 page contract! Here we also have a great example of truth getting mixed with lies to end up with a false impression of the world. We are to check our brains at the door, not consider the context of our collective and controlled society and we are to think that each piece of the puzzle is on its own. This is not the case, as we know from the Pyramid Scheme, things are controlled from the top down on a need to know basis. Articles get edited. Films do to. The rest of the mainstream media is no different. You only see what these 'stage magicians' allow you to see.

SALESMAN

Albert and David Maysles’s Salesman, which opened yesterday at the 68th Street Playhouse, is a documentary feature about four door-to-door Bible salesmen who move horizontally through the capitalistic dream. It’s such a fine, pure picture of a small section of American life that I can’t imagine its ever seeming irrelevant, either as a social document or as one of the best examples of what’s called cinema vérité or direct cinema.

Salesman is not a total movie—that is, a complete experience—as a fiction film may aspire to be. It is fact, photographed and recorded with extraordinarily mobile camera and sound equipment, and then edited and carefully shaped into a kind of cinematic mural of faces, words, motel rooms, parlors, kitchens, streets, television images, radio music—even weather.

The movie is a record of the adventures of four real-life, Boston-based representatives of the Mid-American Bible Company, filmed over a period of two months, first in and around Boston, then at a sales convention in Chicago, and finally during a sales tour in and around Miami. The focal point is Paul Brennan, a lean, bristly, professional Irish-American who, in the course of the movie, slowly comes to realize his inadequacy as a Bible pitchman. In a very gentle way, Salesman is Paul Brennan’s voyage to personal defeat via rented automobile—a gallant Hickey in a Hertz.

Movie purists may object to some of the techniques employed by the Maysles brothers. They have eliminated from the film all evidence that the people being photographed—the salesmen and their customers—are aware of the presence of the camera. Obviously, they also photographed much more material than is included in the finished movie, allowing them to impose a certain narrative order on the events, and with that order, a point of view.

Giving the movie its comic and poignant dimension is Brennan’s performance as Brennan, a cocky, beady-eyed drummer who finally succumbs to “negative thoughts” after a long period of being unable to make a sale.

Reality TV & Documentaries Are Scripted

When we consider the way film and television is produced and the fact that there are union workers involved. We realize that in order to produce say 23 episodes of a supposed reality television show, one would have to ensure that these episodes not only are shot and edited within time and budget allowances, but also tell a compelling emotionally engaging story. There is simply no reason why they would not script it, they'd have to. Even documentary films would have the same constraints. 

“Documentary,” says the dictionary. “Noun. Based on or recreating an actual event, era, life story, that purports to be factually accurate and contains no fictional elements.” Small wonder the jury were split. This ironclad definition leaves no room for the likes of The Arbor, with its lip-synching actors, and no room for the recent Alamar, a staged documentary about a Mexican fisherman and his son that nonetheless manages to be tender, touching and true. Presumably it also locks the door on Ari Folman’s electrifying animated Waltz With Bashir; a film that was all about false memory and that opened, memorably, with a dream sequence involving a pack of devil dogs. Errol Morris, whose groundbreaking The Thin Blue Line, from 1988, lays on a buffet of dodgy eye-witnesses and corrupted reconstructions, is likewise barred from the party.

It’s simply that the further back in film history one goes, the more limiting – if not outright redundant – the dictionary definition turns out to be. The pioneering early documentaries of John Grierson were heavily and openly scripted. Robert Flaherty’s 1922 classic Nanook of the North, while embraced as an authentic window on the Inuit lifestyle, was actually staged for the cameras. In fact, it was only with the arrival of cinema vérité in the 1960s that the documentary and the dictionary begins to dovetail. Our concept of the genre as representing a pure and overriding truth is drawn straight from the films of Fred Wiseman, Barbara Kopple and the Maysles brothers, with their handheld cameras, mobile mics and freewheeling sense of life on the run.

Yet were these pictures really the embodiment of purity? Isn’t there something doubly suspect about a cinematic technique that pretends it is not a technique at all? “What we are seeing now is a crop of cinema releases that are all about the fluctuation between what’s staged and what’s real,” says Stella Bruzzi, author of the book New Documentary. “And I think those are more trustworthy than films that try to represent truth in an uncomplicated way. The 1960s vérité films that purported to have no authorial intervention are actually much more problematic. I have less of an issue with films that reveal the dialogue between the film-maker and the audience.”

We think if all we had was word of mouth hearsay about the goings on in the mythic Washington DC, most of our fellow humans would also be mentally free from this wage slave system.  We think they same should hold true for the state houses and other forms of social control. We need to rid ourselves of all of these 'beasts'.

The great canard is that a bunch of elite got together and wrote a literal recipe down on paper and then spent the next two centuries convincing everyone that the piece of paper had magical meaning. All the media images have always promoted the idea that there were real conflicts and huge lists of problems that need to be solved. Somehow 'we' never solve them, do we?

This current bit of scripted nonsense has made a growing number aware that there is something very contrived about the political process. If only more could se that the entire thing is scripted fiction. It does not matter who wins. 

An Illuminating Interview

This exchange between Mr. Moyers and Joseph Campbell illuminates the problem of religion and the modern News ‘programming’ and other media that has replaced it. Modern history, current affairs and the governments that offer the solutions to the mostly concocted and artificial problems area all part of the theatrical show the 666 Yellow Minion Beast puts on for all of us. The truth, however has a way of shining through the lies. We can use the screens of art to that were meant to trap us, to free our minds and imaginations. We can embrace out Natural heritage as creators in this creation. We are all artists.

JOSEPH CAMPBELL:…When man had eaten of the fruit of the first tree, the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, he is said to have been expelled from the garden. He had already expelled himself from the garden. The garden is the place of unity, nonduality, nonduality of male and female, nonduality of man and God, nonduality of good and evil. You eat the duality, and you’re on the way out. So this tree of the nonduality, is the tree of the exit.

Now, the tree of coming back to the garden is the tree of immortal life. Where you know that “I and the father are one.” And the two that seem to become one again. And this is exactly the tree under which the Buddha sits.

BILL MOYERS: The tree of wisdom?

JOSEPH CAMPBELL: The tree of immortal life, of the knowledge of immortal life. And the Buddha under his tree, and Christ hanging on his tree are the same image. They are the same image. The one who has died to the flesh and been reborn in the spirit. This is an essential experience of any mystical realization; you die to your flesh and are born to your spirit. You identify yourself with the consciousness and life of which your body is but the vehicle. You die to the vehicle and become identified in your consciousness with that of which the vehicle is the carrier, do you understand me? And that is the god.

So that what you get in the vegetation traditions is this notion of identity behind the surface display of duality, identity behind it all. All of these are manifestations of the One. The one radiance shines through all things. The function of art, in a way, is to reveal through the object here the radiance, and that’s what you get when you see the beautiful organization of a fortunately composed work of art. You just say, aha. Somehow it speaks to the order in your own life. ‘This is a realization through art of the very thing that the religions are concerned to render.

BILL MOYERS: That death is life and life is death, and that the two are in accord.

JOSEPH CAMPBELL: You have to have a balance between death and life. They’re two aspects of the same thing, which is being/becoming.

BILL MOYERS: And that’s in all of these stories?

JOSEPH CAMPBELL: All of them. I don’t know one where death is rejected.

BILL MOYERS: This idea of sacrifice is so foreign to our world today.

JOSEPH CAMPBELL: Well, the old idea of being sacrificed is not what we think at all.

BILL MOYERS: No?

JOSEPH CAMPBELL: Just consider: I think the great model of sacrifice is the Mayan Indian ball game. You know they had a kind of basketball game, there’s a loop there up in the stadium wall, and the idea was to get this big heavy ball through that. I don’t know how they did it, with their shoulders or heads or something or other. And the captain of the winning team was sacrificed on the field by the captain of the losing team, his head was cut off. And going to your sacrifice as the winning stroke of your life is the essence of the early sacrificial idea.

There’s a wonderful story that I found in the Jesuit relations, you know, the Jesuits here in the 17th century as missionaries up in Canada and northern New York state and so forth, of a young Iroquois boy who had just been captured by the Hurons or perhaps it was the other way around, I’ve forgotten. And he was being brought to be tortured to death. The Northeast Indians engaged in a systematic torture, which would go on for a long time, and the ordeal was to be sustained with a smile, without flinching, that was it. That was real manhood.

But the boy is brought to this as though he were being brought to his wedding. He is singing, and the people with him are treating him as though they were his hosts and he was the honored guest. And he played the game with them, knowing where he was going. And the priests describing the thing are absolutely bewildered by the situation, and they say that the mockery of this kind of hospitality for people who are then going to be become the brutes. No, those people were the priests! And this was the sacrifice of the altar, and that boy was Jesus, you know, by analogy. And the priest every day is celebrating mass, which is an imitation or repetition actually of the sacrifice of the cross. That’s what this priest was witnessing.

But then you have it also, in John, in the Acts of John: Jesus, before going to crucify the Jesus dance, that’s one of the most beautiful passages in the Christian tradition. In the Matthew, Mark, Luke and John gospels, it’s certainly mentioned that we sang a hymn and Jesus went forth. Well, here you have the whole hymn described: in a ring, Jesus in the center, saying, ‘join hands and we’ll sing and we’ll dance,’ and he says, ‘I am this, I am that, I am so forth and so forth, amen, amen.’ Oh, my God, it’s grand. And then he walks out to be crucified. When you go to your death that way as a god, you are going to your eternal life. What’s sad about that? Let’s make it great And they do.

BILL MOYERS: The god of death is the lord of the dance.

JOSEPH CAMPBELL: The god of death is the lord of sex at the same time.

BILL MOYERS: What do you mean?

JOSEPH CAMPBELL: It’s a marvelous thing. One after another, you can see these gods Ghede, the death god of the Haitian voodoo, is also the sex god. Wotan had one eye covered and the other uncovered, do you see, and at the same time was the lord of life. Osiris, the lord of death and the lord of the generation of life. It’s a basic theme: that which dies is born. You have to have death in order to have life.

Now, this is the origin thought really of the head hunt, in Southeast Asia and particularly in the Indonesian zone. The head hunt, right up to now, has been a sacred act, it’s a sacred killing: Unless there is death, there cannot be birth, and a young man, before he can be permitted to marry and become a father, must have gone forth and had his kill.

BILL MOYERS: What does that say to you?

JOSEPH CAMPBELL: Well, that every generation has to die in order that the next generation should come. As soon as you beget or give birth to a child, you are the dead one; the child is the new life and you are simply the protector of that new life.

BILL MOYERS: Your time has come and you know it.

JOSEPH CAMPBELL: Yeah, well, that’s why there is this deep psychological association of begetting and dying.

BILL MOYERS: Isn’t there some relationship between what you’re saying and this fact, that a father will give his life for his son, a mother will give her life for her child?”
