Are Parabolic Flights Fake?

Does this look like a real passenger jet to you?

Can real jets move up and down like a magical toy airplane on a string? NASA's Vomit Comet does not move like a real aircraft, does it?

This appears to be a Hollywood miniature effects shot and not footage of a real flight at all.

Please notice at the end of the video, there is highly edited footage of birds that appear to be tied to harnesses.

Hollywood Special Effects

Hollywood has been able to fake parabolic flights for years. Water can even be simulated to look like it is in "zero-g". Film like James Cameron's "The Abyss" from the late 1980's clearly shows us what was possible decades ago. NASA is a film effects studio, Do not trust any of their work.

There are many ways to fake it. Parabolic flights make little logical sense.

Free Falling

Can you explain how this could work?

Gravity pulls a body towards the center of the Earth. How can does this flight path avoid gravity? The plane never points straight down. In order to experience free fall on a passenger jet, the jet itself needs to be falling and out of the control of the pilot. A passenger jet can't just simply move up and down like it is on a string. It is not a helicopter and cannot maneuver like how a helicopter or elevator would. The passenger jet lacks any way for it to be able to perform such a maneuver as we see in the above NASA video. It is impossible.

Gravity Matters

The passengers and the jet itself would need to be approaching the Earth's surface at the same high velocity.

The passenger jet would have to be falling too. It needs to accelerate with the exact same increasing velocity as the falling body does.

A Fake Flight

One would still experience gravity during the entire flight. Gravity would not stop working would it?  A ballistic trajectory means gravity is still at work. Ballistic physics demonstrably shows us that gravity is independent from the projectile's horizontal velocity One cannot effect the other. The same logic and natural principle applies to the passenger jet.

Does this really make sense?

"The aircraft gives its occupants the sensation of weightlessness by following a parabolic flight path relative to the center of the Earth. While following this path, the aircraft and its payload are in free fall at certain points of its flight path. The aircraft is used in this way to demonstrate to astronauts what it is like to orbit the Earth. During this time the aircraft does not exert any ground reaction force on its contents, causing the sensation of weightlessness.

Initially, the aircraft climbs with a pitch angle of 45 degrees using engine thrust and elevator controls. The sensation of weightlessness is achieved by reducing thrust and lowering the nose to maintain a neutral, or "zero lift", configuration such that the aircraft follows a ballistic trajectory, with engine thrust exactly compensating for drag. Weightlessness begins while ascending and lasts all the way "up-and-over the hump", until the craft reaches a downward pitch angle of around 30 degrees. The Passenger Jet Itself Would Have To Be In Free Fall

Does it look like the passenger jet ever points straight down? In order to achieve the magical zero-g, or free fall, one would assume the passenger jet would need to be falling towards the center of the Earth too. If you look at the arc above, and read the description you can see that this does not seem to make any sense. We would expect the passenger jet to need to be falling at the same rate as the occupants. It would not be under the control of the pilot. A plane flying in an arc can't magically make gravity disappear. The jet would have to point straight up and down, would it not? It would need to be falling too. The wings would make it impossible for the jet to start to drop like a stone. The parabolic arc itself cannot magically alter the fact that gravity is still pulling all bodies towards the center of the Earth.

"An object dropped at the top of a drop tube. An object thrown upward or a person jumping off the ground at low speed (i.e. as long as air resistance is negligible in comparison to weight).

Technically, an object is in free fall even when moving upwards or instantaneously at rest at the top of its motion. If gravity is the only influence acting, then the acceleration is always downward and has the same magnitude for all bodies, commonly denoted g."

Demonstrable Ballistic Physics Proves The Parabolic Arc Problematic

"If our thought experiment continues and we project the cannonball horizontally in the presence of gravity, then the cannonball would maintain the same horizontal motion as before - a constant horizontal velocity. Furthermore, the force of gravity will act upon the cannonball to cause the same vertical motion as before - a downward acceleration. The cannonball falls the same amount of distance as it did when it was merely dropped from rest (refer to diagram below). However, the presence of gravity does not affect the horizontal motion of the projectile."
