"Cruise missiles, cousins of the German V-1 Buzz Bombs of World War II, have taken on an increasingly prominent role in the arms race during the last quarter century. According to William M. Arkin, a weapons expert at the Washington-based Institute for Policy Studies, the Russians deployed their first ones - which had a far shorter range than those now being tested - in 1958 and are now thought to have cruise missiles on more than 600 ships, aircraft and submarines."
